How to Use the Derila Ergo Pillow
To use the Derila Ergo correctly, place the taller side of the butterfly contour toward the foot of the bed, rest your head in a raised wing if side sleeping or in the central depression if back sleeping, and allow 7 to 14 nights for cervical muscles to adapt to the new alignment.

Step 1 — Unbox and air for 24 hours
Memory foam compresses for shipping. Remove the Derila Ergo from its packaging and let it expand on a flat surface for 24 hours. A faint, harmless off-gassing smell is normal and disappears within 48 hours.
Step 2 — Identify the contour orientation
The taller side of the butterfly contour faces the foot of the bed. The lower side, with the central depression, sits closer to the headboard. The shoulder cutout should align with your shoulder when you turn onto your side.
Step 3 — Match the contour to your sleep position
Side sleepers rest the head in one of the raised lateral wings. Back sleepers settle the occiput into the central depression so the cervical curve is supported. Avoid stomach sleeping on a contour pillow — it will hyperextend the neck.
Step 4 — Allow a 7 to 14 night adaptation period
Your cervical muscles have adapted to your old pillow. Expect mild stiffness for the first 2 to 3 nights as alignment changes. By night 7, most testers report a measurable drop in morning neck stiffness.
Step 5 — Care for the cover and foam
Remove and machine-wash the cover cold, tumble dry low. Never wash the memory foam core — spot clean only. Rotate the pillow end-to-end every two weeks to keep the contour even.
The mistakes that make people give up too early
Most people who abandon a contoured pillow do so in the first three nights, and usually for one of a small number of reasons. Using it back to front is the commonest: the two ridges are different heights, and sleeping on the taller one as a back sleeper pushes your chin toward your chest. Adding a pillowcase that is too thick is next — a heavily padded case fills in the central depression and cancels out the shaping you paid for. A thin, close-fitting case is better.
The third is stacking. If you have spent years on two pillows, one correctly-sized pillow will feel too low at first, and the instinct is to put the old one underneath. That puts your neck straight back into the position you were trying to correct. If the Derila feels too low after a fortnight, the answer is a different pillow height, not a second pillow.
Caring for it so the foam lasts
Memory foam should not go in a washing machine — the agitation tears the cell structure and the pillow never recovers its loft. Wash the cover, and spot-clean the foam itself with a barely damp cloth and mild detergent, then let it air-dry completely before putting the cover back on. Trapped moisture is what causes odour, not the foam.
Two habits extend its life: air it occasionally rather than leaving it permanently under a duvet, and avoid folding or compressing it for storage, since foam that is kept compressed can take a set. A new pillow may also have a faint chemical smell for the first day or two — that is off-gassing from the foam and it dissipates; unwrap it a few hours before you intend to sleep on it.
How to tell it is working
Judge it on how you feel in the first hour after waking, not on how it feels when you lie down. Comfort on contact and correct support are different things — a pillow that feels instantly lovely is often one that is letting your head sink too far. The signal you want is less stiffness on waking and fewer position changes during the night. Give it seven consecutive nights before deciding, and use the returns window if it is not working; a pillow that suits someone else's neck is not obliged to suit yours.
